3 Best Japan Treehouse Rentals (2026)

Looking for the best treehouse rentals in Japan? From subtropical Okinawa to the forests and lakes of Hokkaido, Japan has a small but seriously interesting collection of unusual places to stay.

And these aren’t all your typical rustic wooden cabins.

You can sleep in a private treehouse overlooking the sea in Okinawa, stay in a secluded architectural hideaway on a cliff above the Pacific Ocean, or escape to the forests of Hokkaido for hot springs and mountain scenery.

I’ve kept this guide deliberately short because there aren’t many genuine bookable treehouse stays in Japan. Rather than filling the list with ordinary cabins and glamping tents, I’ve focused on three unusual properties that offer a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

I’ve also made it clear where a property is treehouse-inspired rather than a traditional house built in a tree, so you know exactly what you’re booking.

Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, road trip, or a more unusual addition to a longer Japan itinerary, these are three of the best treehouse stays in Japan.

Izu Cliff House

This modernist cliff-side villa was built in 1971 and sits alone inside a coastal National Park on the southern tip of Japan’s stunning Izu Peninsula.

The glass-fronted home and deck were designed to maximize the open views of the Pacific Ocean.

It is close to famous beaches, hiking trails, hot springs and temples.

Why We Picked It: First things first: Izu Cliff House isn’t a traditional treehouse built around the trunk of a tree.

Instead, I’ve included it as a treehouse alternative because it offers many of the same things travelers are looking for: complete privacy, immersion in nature, unusual architecture, and spectacular views from an elevated setting.

Perched alone on a cliff at the southern end of the Izu Peninsula, this glass-fronted modernist vacation home overlooks the Pacific Ocean from inside a protected national park.

The house dates back to the 1970s and was designed to take full advantage of its dramatic location.

Inside, there’s around 700 square feet of space spread across two levels, with room for up to five guests.

But the real reason to stay here is outside.

A large deck faces the Pacific and can be used for everything from morning yoga to barbecues and watching the sunset over the ocean.

There are no neighboring buildings, helping the property feel remarkably secluded despite being within reach of beaches, hiking trails, temples, and hot springs around the Izu Peninsula.

If you specifically want to sleep in the branches of a tree, choose one of the other properties in this guide. But if what you’re really looking for is an extraordinary Japanese hideaway surrounded by nature, Izu Cliff House deserves a place on your shortlist.

Best Overall โ€“ Treehouse Hotel Morinosubako

Tree-house Hotel Morinosubako

Situated in Nakijin, Tree-house Hotel Morinosubako offers accommodation with free WiFi, air conditioning, a bar and a garden.

This property offers access to a balcony and free private parking.

The kitchenette features a microwave, a fridge and a toaster and there is bidet with a hairdryer and free toiletries.

Why We Picked It: If you’re searching for a genuine treehouse in Japan, Tree-house Hotel Morinosubako is one of the most interesting options I’ve found.

Hidden among the trees on a hillside in Nakijin, the private treehouse looks out across the lush landscape toward Okinawa’s famously blue sea.

The treehouse was originally handmade over many years before being renovated into the unusual accommodation you can stay in today. Rather than removing the natural elements that make it special, the design incorporates a living tree into the interior.

At around 377 square feet, it’s compact but cleverly designed and can accommodate up to four guests. There’s a queen-size bed plus an additional double-size mattress, along with air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, a private bathroom, and a mini kitchenette.

Large windows and a balcony help make the surrounding forest and ocean views part of the experience.

There’s also a cafรฉ and private forest sauna on the same property, giving you another reason to spend some time here rather than treating it purely as somewhere to sleep.

The location is particularly useful if you’re road-tripping around northern Okinawa, with beaches, Kouri Island, Nakijin Castle Ruins, and Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium all within the wider area.

For a genuine Japanese treehouse surrounded by subtropical nature, this is my top choice.

Wacka BBB Treehouse

Featuring mountain views, Wakka BBB offers accommodation with a balcony and a kettle, around 4.4 miles from Lake Kussharo.

This lodge features a garden, barbecue facilities, free WiFi and free private parking.

The air-conditioned lodge consists of 2 bedrooms, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen with a fridge and a coffee machine, and 1 bathroom with a bidet and a shower.

An Asian breakfast is available every morning at the lodge.

Wakka BBB offers 2-star accommodation with a hot tub and terrace.

A bicycle rental service is available at the accommodation, while cycling can be enjoyed nearby.

Why We Picked It: Wakka BBB offers a completely different treehouse experience from subtropical Okinawa.

Located in a forest near Lake Kussharo in eastern Hokkaido, this secluded lodge is surrounded by the kind of wild Japanese landscape where Ezo squirrels, deer, foxes, and numerous bird species can be spotted.

The property is designed for just one group at a time, giving you more than 1,000 tsubo of private space to enjoy with your family or friends.

Inside, there are two bedrooms and four semi-double beds, accommodating up to four guests. You’ll also have a living area and kitchenette.

But the biggest highlight is the private hot spring experience.

There’s an indoor bath supplied with continuously flowing natural hot spring water, plus a wonderfully unusual outdoor milk-tank bath overlooking Lake Kussharo.

You can also spend your evenings around the outdoor fireplace or prepare a barbecue surrounded by the forest.

The location is particularly good for exploring eastern Hokkaido. Lake Kussharo is nearby, while Lake Mashu and the wider landscapes of Akan-Mashu National Park make this an excellent base for a nature-focused road trip.

If you want forest, wildlife, hot springs, and the feeling of escaping into rural Japan, Wakka BBB is the standout choice.

Where to Stay in a Treehouse in Japan

Japan’s unusual treehouse stays are spread across completely different parts of the country, so where you stay will depend heavily on your wider itinerary.

Okinawa โ€“ Best for a Genuine Treehouse & Tropical Scenery

If sleeping in an actual treehouse is your priority, choose Tree-house Hotel Morinosubako.

Located in Nakijin in northern Okinawa, this handmade treehouse sits in a forest overlooking the ocean and is rented privately to one group at a time.

Okinawa’s subtropical climate also creates a completely different treehouse experience from mainland Japan, with beaches, forests, islands, and warm coastal scenery to explore nearby.

Izu Peninsula โ€“ Best for Ocean Views

Choose Izu Cliff House if spectacular scenery and unusual architecture are more important to you than staying in a literal treehouse.

The house stands alone on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean at the southern end of the Izu Peninsula.

It’s also within reach of beaches, hiking trails, hot springs, and temples, making it a great addition to a road trip from Tokyo.

Hokkaido โ€“ Best for Forests, Wildlife & Hot Springs

For a completely different experience, head north to Wakka BBB in eastern Hokkaido.

Surrounded by forest near Lake Kussharo, this private retreat combines wildlife, outdoor activities, and beautiful scenery with its own natural hot spring baths.

It’s particularly well suited to travelers exploring the lakes and mountains of eastern Hokkaido by car.
