Farmington also makes a useful base for exploring southeastern Missouri, particularly if hiking, state parks, wineries, and scenic drives are part of your trip.

Making it one of the most unique treehouses in Minnesota.
Why We Picked It: Treehouse Mansion Lofty Lodge is a great option if you want the novelty of a treehouse without giving up comfort. The polished design and private hot tub give it a more luxurious feel than a rustic cabin, making it particularly appealing for anniversaries, romantic weekends, and special occasions.
Its Cottage Grove location is another advantage, especially if you want a nature-inspired escape without traveling too far from Minneapolis and St. Paul.

This romantic treehouse is perfect for adventurers looking for an off-grid treehouse experience in Ohio.
There is no electricity, no running water, and limited cell service, but is a wonderful place to enjoy the campfire, relax in a hammock and hike the surrounding trails.
Why We Picked It: Tullihas in the Trees is a great choice if you want a genuinely rustic treehouse experience. Set beside a wooded creek with views across the surrounding countryside, the treehouse is designed for travelers who want to unplug and spend a few days immersed in nature.
There are hiking trails around the property, while the deck is ideal for relaxing and taking in the peaceful surroundings. With space for up to five guests, it can work for couples as well as adventurous families and small groups.

Why We Picked It: This secluded Deerbrook treehouse is a particularly good option for travelers who want to spend most of their Midwest getaway outdoors. River and trail access put nature right on the doorstep, while the wooded setting gives the property the sense of privacy you’d expect from a treehouse escape.
It’s a good base for hiking, exploring the surrounding countryside, and enjoying a quieter part of Wisconsin away from the state’s busier vacation destinations.

The property is also close to the French Lick and West Baden Springs area, giving you the option of combining quiet time at the treehouse with restaurants, historic attractions, and activities nearby.

Where to Stay in a Midwest Treehouse
The best place to book a treehouse in the Midwest depends on the type of getaway you’re planning and how far you want to travel.
For hiking and outdoor adventures, southern Illinois is a great choice. Beautiful Jaybird Treehouse puts you close to Shawnee National Forest, while Wisconsin also works particularly well for travelers looking for forests, rivers, and trails.
For a romantic weekend, consider The Treehouse – Unique 2 Storey Cabin on the River in Indiana, Treehouse Mansion Lofty Lodge in Minnesota, or Tree House at Spring Lake Ranch in Missouri. These stays work particularly well for couples who want the treehouse itself to be a major part of the trip.
If you want a Great Lakes getaway, Michigan combines unusual accommodation with beaches, scenic drives, and Lake Michigan views. Nebraska offers something a little different with Kottage Knechtion Treehouse B&B, while Ohio has more rustic options for travelers who want an off-grid escape.
Whichever state you choose, one of the advantages of the Midwest is the variety. You can find everything from simple off-grid treehouses to luxury retreats with hot tubs, making it possible to plan anything from a one-night stop to a longer nature-focused vacation.
Midwest Treehouse Rentals FAQs
What states are considered the Midwest?
The U.S. Census Bureau defines the Midwest as 12 states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
This covers a huge area, so landscapes and treehouse experiences vary considerably depending on where you stay.
Which Midwest states have the best treehouse rentals?
You can find unusual treehouse stays throughout the region, but states with large forested areas, lakes, and established outdoor tourism tend to offer particularly good options.
Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin are all worth considering, depending on whether you want hiking, lake access, romantic accommodation, or a more secluded woodland escape.
Are there luxury treehouse rentals in the Midwest?
Yes. Midwest treehouses range from rustic off-grid cabins to more luxurious stays with full bathrooms, kitchens, heating, air conditioning, and private hot tubs.
If comfort is important, check the amenities carefully before booking because the experience can vary significantly from one property to another.
Are there Midwest treehouses with hot tubs?
Yes. Some treehouse rentals in the Midwest include private hot tubs, making them particularly appealing for romantic weekends and fall or winter getaways.
Availability and amenities can change, so always confirm that the hot tub is included with your specific accommodation before booking.
What is the best time of year for a Midwest treehouse getaway?
Late spring through fall is ideal if hiking, lakes, and outdoor activities are the focus of your trip. Fall can be especially beautiful in heavily forested destinations when the leaves change color.
Winter can also be a great time for a cozy treehouse break, but make sure the property is properly heated and accessible in snowy or icy conditions.
How far in advance should I book a Midwest treehouse?
Booking a few months ahead is sensible, particularly for summer weekends, fall foliage season, holiday weekends, and properties with only one treehouse available.
If you have a specific property and fixed dates in mind, booking earlier will usually give you the best chance of securing it.
